To tackle a dwindling water supply, the City of Santa Barbara, CA proposed the reactivation of the Charles D. Meyer Desalination Plant that was placed in stand-by mode and had not operated for more than 20 years. Concerns arose surrounding the environmental impacts that the plant’s reopening would create, including the destruction of marine life through the use of the existing flat panel intake that was part of the plant’s original design.

Although there are several different types of water intake screen technologies, traveling screens and wedge wire passive water intake screens are commonly specified as a 316(b) solution. Ultimately, it’s good to understand the basic principles and benefits of each type of system. There are some similarities as well as key differences between the two technologies that should be considered when choosing the appropriate screening system.

When designing an intake system, the water intake screen is a critical element to a well-designed system. The entire water intake system is dependent on the functionality of the water intake screen in order to work correctly. If the screen is designed properly, it leads to an efficient system that will reduce maintenance costs over the system’s lifespan. However, cost savings isn’t the only consideration to a good design.
